|Consciously building your unique and sustainable culture
Many people overlook the importance of building the right culture in the workplace. And yet organisational culture is a key business enabler for turning performance into results. The ethics, values and philosophy of your company will impact on your employees’ behaviour, productivity, and their desire to stay with you.
According to business magazine Management Today, not one staff member has left Google Australia during the past four years, an extraordinary feat of retention. But what is it about Google’s organisational culture that inspires such loyalty among all levels of its people?
“We are always trying to perpetuate what is already an incredibly good culture,” Siobhan Lyndon, Google Australia’s HR manager, told Management Today. “We try to make the work environment as fuss-free as possible for employees, from providing on-site massages to providing catered lunches for all of our staff every day.”
And Google Australia said it was imperative that the company hired people passionate about Google, and who would fit into the organisation’s culture. “We’re about an atmosphere of collaboration, and decision by group, so that’s reflected in our interview process too,” said Lyndon.
Now you might not be able to give away free lunches and massages to keep your staff happy, but you can create a culture that encourages your staff to participate in, contribute to and remain loyal to your company. Whether that’s a sense of collaboration, or entrepreneurship, or growth, or support, will depend on your personal business goals.
But whatever your needs, HR Outsourcing can help diagnose your current culture and then work with your management team and people to develop the best culture and working environment for the benefit of your people and your company.
